What is the Year 1 Phonics Check?

The Phonics Check is a quick and easy way for teachers to gauge the phonics knowledge of Year 1 students. It shows how well children in Year 1 can ‘decode' by recognising the sound each individual letter makes, by identifying sounds that different letter combinations make, and by being able to blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.

The Phonics Check helps Year 1 teachers and the school to confirm whether each child has made the expected progress.

The Phonics Check is not compulsory; however, it has many benefits, including helping teachers to check reading progress and to plan early interventions for those children who may be struggling.

Let's take a closer look at how the Phonics Check works so you'll be ready to start.
