Analyse and respond

Go to the Year 1 Phonics Check

The data you collect from the Year 1 Phonics Check gives valuable information to ensure targeted learning can be in place for your students. To make the most of your data, follow these steps:

  1. Run individual student and group reports through the Phonics Check platform.
  2. Analyse report data to look for patterns in strengths and areas of need.
  3. Respond to your results by planning next steps for individuals and groups.

Run reports

You can view student results through the Phonics Check platform itself or export results to Excel through the ‘Reporting’ section:

  • Group report: contains results for a whole class or group of students. Generate this report first to see trends across a class, and identify struggling, developing and fluent decoders.
  • Individual student report: contains results for a single student. Use this report to drill down on specific needs for struggling decoders.
  • Multi-class report (school administrators only): contains results for all students who have sat the Phonics Check in that calendar year. Use this report to look for trends across a cohort.

For details on how to run reports, see the Phonics Check user manual.

Visualise and analyse data

Use the Literacy Hub's Word and code complexity continuum to analyse group and individual results. This continuum arranges the 40 words from the Phonics Check in order of increasing complexity.

Follow the videos below to add your student data to the continuum and begin to analyse student strengths and areas of needs.

Respond to analysis findings

Once you have identified student strengths and areas of need using the continuum, follow the videos below to start to plan your response.

Depending on the needs your classroom, you may have to plan for intervention for small groups and individual students. For all tiers of intervention, follow a systematic synthetic phonics approach using explicit instruction principles. For further guidance, see Implementing a systematic synthetic phonics approach.
